We, the men of Delta Sigma Phi, are in the process of putting on our second annual “Sounds 4 Support” Battle of the Bands benefit concert and the events surrounding it. The concert’s purpose is to raise suicide awareness and to raise money for Champaign Mental Health Center, a local group dedicated to suicide awareness and prevention. Last year, Champaign answered 4,645 crisis calls and met with 1,646 individuals face to face in crisis situations. Their TIMES Center shelter also supplied 18,640 nights of care and 61,125 meals to individuals in need. Many of these services were possible because of the donations that Champaign Mental Health Care Center received from churches, civic organizations, and individuals in our community.
Suicide is a topic that strikes particularly close to home for many Delta Sigs. In May 1997, brother George Francis Hendry took his own life because of a combination of academic failure and pressures concerning his future. Hendry made a profound impact on the lives of many of the younger brothers as the house pledge educator. So profound, in fact, that his pledges rose to the challenge the next semester and threw a benefit concert to remember brother Hendry, and to raise awareness about suicide prevention. This year we are continuing that tradition with our annual Sounds 4 Support benefit concert. The show will occur on April 3rd at Joe’s Brewery in Champaign from approximately 8 - 12 pm. As well as the concert however, we will be canning on the quad while hosting several speakers from the Mental Health Center outside of the Illini Union in a week long effort to raise money and increase awareness.
Along with accepting donations, we are selling wristbands and tshirts to raise money for the Mental Health Center of Champaign County's suicide awareness fund. Wristbands are $3, and provide free cover at Joe's until 11pm, $1 drafts until 11pm, and 2 raffle tickets for coupons such as a free meal at a local restaurant. Tshirts are being sold for $6 each, and can be seen here. Contact your favorite Delta Sig member or one of our philanthropy chairs below if you would like a wristband or a tshirt (or if you just want to donate money to the cause).
